If you are a citizen of an EEA member state, you do not need a residence permit to move to Hungary, but you need to register your stay in Hungary. If you are a third-country national, you will need a residence permit for a stay over 90 days.
Your passport must be valid at least 90 days longer than the permit you are applying for; this means that if your passport is close to expiring, you will need to renew it before we submit your residency application, otherwise your permit will only be issued up to the expiry date of your passport.
Yes, it is possible. Everyone is automatically enrolled in the state health insurance system as soon as they begin working. Employers register their employees and apply for a social security number (a so-called TAJ number) on their behalf. Afterward, the employee should receive the TAJ card, an official identification document containing their social security number. TAJ cards issued to foreign nationals are valid only for a specified period.
Free healthcare services include medical screenings and examinations, general medical care, and specialized care for emergencies. The Hungarian healthcare system provides accident insurance coverage for insured individuals. In case of injury, employees must immediately notify their employer. The insurance covers all work-related injuries and illnesses sustained during work, while commuting to or from work (workplace accidents), and diseases or health deterioration caused by occupational hazards (occupational diseases).
Employees covered by social security are entitled to sick leave and sick pay. Employees are entitled to 15 working days of sick leave per calendar year if they are unable to work due to illness. Sick leave is granted proportionally from the start date of the employment relationship. During sick leave, the employer is required to pay 70% of the employee's salary. A doctor must issue a certificate confirming the employee's incapacity for work, which the employee must present to their employer.
Leave for caring for dependents is part of the sick pay system. The length of permitted leave depends on the child’s age: unlimited for children under one year old; up to 84 days per child per year for children aged 12–35 months; 42 days for children aged 36–71 months; and 14 days for children aged 6–12 years. Single parents are entitled to double the leave. This leave is a family entitlement, and sick pay is provided at 50% or 60% of the actual salary.
